The music playing, with apologies for the sound quality, is Ernest at the piano.

It was recorded on a standard radio cassette player at his home, whist he was just tinkering around with pieces by Henri Mancini.

Ernest Turner (1924 - 2006)

Ernest was born in 1924 to Ernest snr and Myra Turner. As a lad, he was a keen cricketer and played for Sheffield Boys. He began learning piano at an early age and music became pretty much his career until he retired through ill health.

He began his musical career, playing in theatres throughout the U.K. from the age of 15. He broadcast on the BBC light program at the age of 17.

His army days with the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders regiment, found him in the military band playing flute and piccolo by day and piano in the army dance band by night.

He married Eva (nee Kelford) in 1948 and although he had offers to play in nationally known bands, he decided against more touring as he didn't see it as conducive to family life. He therefore continued his playing career at a more local level. Ernest and Eva had three sons: Andrew (b1950), Raymond (b1953) and Mark (b1967)

Ernest's painting & drawing

Throughout his life, until blindness halted it later, Ernest was a prolific and talented artist in pen and ink, oils and watercolour. He held many exhibitions in the Sheffield area. His subjects varied  between copies of his favourite old masters to local scenes and even the odd portrait. Photographs of some of his work (the ones I can gain access to) will be added to this site as and when possible.
